Queen Urraca of Léon, Castille and Gallica was also known as la temeraria or the reckless. Through multiple marriages, she strategically found moments to take charge and has been described by historians as being both prudent and modest. She disdained her second husband, who was overly superstitious of crows and ravens, and treated her harshly and poorly. She had risen to the position of Queen through her own bloodline, and resented having to share power with a succession of brutish men. Nevertheless, she took many lovers (earning her her epithet), outlived many husbands, and, as contemporary writers wrote jealously of her, “took control, perhaps too much control of events”.
