This original artwork on paper captures a cluster of figs through Daniel O’Connell’s expressive use of colour, fluid linework and layered pigment. Rich tones of burnt red, ochre, plum and golden yellow bring warmth and depth to the fruit, while loose black marks and scattered ink droplets give the composition its characteristic energy.

Set against a generous white ground, the figs become almost sculptural in form. Part of O’Connell’s exploration of food, nature and the rituals of the kitchen, the work transforms an everyday ingredient into something vibrant, tactile and full of personality.

About the Artist:

Daniel O’Connell is a Sydney based artist known for his vibrant, detailed paintings that explore colour, movement and form. Working from his Palm Beach studio, his practice draws inspiration from the natural environment and everyday life, transforming familiar subjects through an expressive and distinctive use of colour.

About the Work:

In Figs, O’Connell takes a familiar culinary subject and gives it a sense of movement and spontaneity. Layers of rust, crimson, plum and ochre bleed into one another, while energetic black linework loosely defines each individual form.

The imperfect outlines, visible washes and splattered marks celebrate the looseness of the artist’s process rather than disguising it. Warm and expressive, the piece reflects O’Connell’s fascination with the kitchen as a place of creativity, conversation and connection, while bringing a rich hit of colour into the home.
